CMU Tepper MBA Essays 2011-2012: Writing Tips

1. What are your short-term and long-term goals? How will a Tepper MBA help you to achieve these goals? (Please include any information regarding what steps you have taken to learn more about the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University.)
Clearly state your immediate post MBA goals as well as the general direction in which you see your career evolving over the long term. Mention specific industry and function if you can. Summarizing your experience so far, what skills/knowledge have you picked up which can assist you in achieving these goals and what more do you need? How will the Tepper MBA help you to bridge this gap – be precise in answering this. For e.g. if you wish to become an Investment Banker, what in the Tepper MBA program will be useful towards your goal. And include steps you have taken to know about Tepper such as talking to alumni, researching the website, attending school’s information sessions, demo classes etc.

2. The Tepper School is looking for individuals who will make an impact. Give an example of a time where you made an impact in your professional or academic life.
Did you ever take up an initiative that changed the way things are done/helped to achieve a significant result, benefiting a larger group or organization? Explain this initiative, your role, what problems you might have faced and how you overcame these. What was the net result of this.

Option1:Describe an obstacle you have faced in your professional or academic life. How did you overcome this obstacle and how did it foster your development?
When faced with a tough situation, what is your response? Explain a situation where you had difficulties in meeting a certain goal – briefly state the nature of these difficulties and how they were preventing you from reaching your goal. What did you then do? When you eventually surmounted the obstacle, how did you feel and what did you learn through the process?

Option2:Describe a time in which your ethics were challenged. How did you deal with the situation and what did you learn from it?
What was the conflict before you – by going in for a certain decision how would you have compromised on principles that were important to you? Therefore what did you do and how did that affect the different people involved as well as the goal before you? What did you learn in terms of managing people/ upholding ethics through this?

Option1:One thing people would be surprised to know about me is?
Use this opportunity to reflect some interesting facet of yourself – maybe outside your professional life. Don’t pick up professional achievements –instead you can choose to write about one of your special interests e.g. you are an avid runner or you formed a music band at college. Also make sure you focus on just one point and not get tempted to write several interesting things about yourself.

Option2: Outside of my professional and/or academic life, I am especially proud of?
This will be an opportunity to talk about something that you have not been able to show via other essays. They tell you specifically to stick to non-academic and professional stories; take a lead and talk about personal revelations. Are you proud of overcoming a fear of water and reach national level swimming championship? Or it was saving a flood victim that made you proud of yourself? Example can be any but make sure that you address the ‘why’ part well.

What are your professional objectives? (300 words)

Simply state your short term and long term career goals.The two must be logically consistent with each other and also the career path should justify your motivation to pursue a Wharton MBA. In other words, why not just work in your current organization instead of doing an MBA?what additional skills/knowledge do you need for your future career which the Wharton MBA can help you gain.

Reflect on a time when you turned down an opportunity. What was the thought process behind your decision? Would you make the same decision today? (600 words)

As a manager and leader, you will find yourself in such situations often where you have to decide between two equally appealign opportunities. When you chose a particular opportunity over another, what went into your decision making process-how did you measure the benefits and risks associated with that opportunity? Who else helped you to decide, how did you gather information to assist your decision making etc. What impact did turning down that opportunity have on you, say personally and professionally. Were you satisfied in hindsight or what you would you change about how you decided?

Discuss a time when you faced a challenging interpersonal experience. How did you navigate the situation and what did you learn from it? (600 words)

This is not only about a professional relationship, although you may be well advised to keep to a difficult professional relationship and how you smoothened the rough edges to this relationship. Whatever relationship you choose to write about, explain where the points of disagreement were, what was the impact of this disagreement and therefore what you did to come around it. What did you learn about handling relationships from this situation?

Stanford MBA essays 2011-2012: Analysis and writing tips

What matters most to you, and why?
If something really matter to you, you must also be explain why it is so important to you – therefore if you choose to mention say social entrepreneurship as a career goal, then trace the path of how and why this goal developed. You could also write about a certain value/principle you believe in – give examples of how you have practiced these values/principles and also explain why these are meaningful to you.
What do you want to do –REALLY- and why Stanford?
Make sure your response is genuine –do not choose a particular career goal because you think it looks trendy. Can you justify your interest –with examples of how you have perhaps developed your knowledge/skills related to what you really want to do or how you have taken the initiative to learn by doing something related to that area. Given your interest in this area, why is Stanford a good option for you – research the school’s offerings thoroughly to answer this.
Tell us about a time when you built or developed a team whose performance exceeded expectations
First of all what was the goal/result your team was working towards? Along the way, what hurdles did your team encounter and how did you play an enabling role in removing these? Highlight the leadership role you played – e.g. solving conflicts, getting resources for the team against the odds, keeping up their motivation when things got tough. Finally, how did all these actions lead to the team exceeding expectations – against what was originally expected of them , what did your team end up delivering.
Tell us about a time when you made a lasting impact on your organization.
Since it asks for lasting impact, pick up such an achievement where the impact went beyond a one time situation and maybe changed things within or for your organization. E.g. changing the internal knowledge management system for your division which made efficiency and productivity go up dramatically. Why did you take up such an initiative and what helped you to succeed at it.
Tell us about a time when you generated support from others for an idea or initiative.
What kind of a leader are you – and how do you manage opposition or resistance to change? Begin with explaining what the situation was, why was it important to secure support for the idea and what were the barriers to this. How did you break down this resistance and what did you learn from the whole situation.
Tell us about a time when you went beyond what was defined or established.
Are you one who is satisfied with the status quo or one who takes initiative to improve systems/processes/bring in new practices? When was a time when you did something like this and why? Explain what the usual practice/system was and why you took upon yourself the onus to go beyond what was expected? How did you grow while doing this and what was the impact of what you did?
