Is ISB turning into a huge breeding ground for Entrepreneurs?

ISB and Entrepreneurship have had a strong connect right from the inception of the school. Entrepreneurial mindset has traditionally been said to be something which is inherited and not acquired. Does that mean that ISB specially attracts a certain genre of students to its fold, the ones who raise its Entrepreneurship mast higher every year? The fact remains that over the past 11 years more than 200 ISBians have turned successful entrepreneurs.

Well so, look at a host of things that ISB does in the field of entrepreneurship and new ventures.

Partnership with TiE: Recognizing that the next wave of growth will be definitely coming from the tier II cities, the Hyderabad chapter of TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs) is planning to take its startup-investor connect initiatives to Tier-II cities like Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Tirupati from next year. Also, in the sixth edition of TiE-ISB Connect 2012 (22^nd November in Hyderabad), almost 40 investors and leading venture capital firms like Sequoia, Mumbai Angels, IDG Venture, Ventureast and Nexus Ventures, are expected to participate.

The TiE-ISB Connect 2012 will have VC and Mentor Connects, through which startups can meet investors and mentors. It will also have Jumpstart, a workshop where successful entrepreneurs and early-stage investors would guide delegates for starting or running a business enterprise.

The event will also have BizQuest, where a jury of investors will evaluate around 150 small and growth companies, and award Rs 1 crore of investment to a winning startup company.

Shadow a CEO: This innovation is also launched by the ISB, in collaboration with the Give India Foundation, is part of the Joy of Giving Week in 2012. More than 50 CEOs are expected to participate in the event. This event, in earlier years, has seen lot of news pouring about participation of CEOs of bluechip companies such as Narayan Murthi, Adi Godrej, R Gopalakrishnan and Kiran Majumdar. However this initiative is also clearly showing an Entrepreneurship bent since a lot of CEOs are expected to be from SMEs and start-ups this time.

WCED: The Wadhwani Center for Entrepreneurship Development has launched another innovative program called “Start-up First” which gives more fillip to structured entrepreneurship. The enticement of going through an entrepreneurial continuum while being in the school is too enticing even for those who have not earlier thought of getting into it. We would say – go for it – even if your career plan is to enter a more matured corporate world.

We feel that the current wave definitely favours entrepreneurs. Low cost manpower, increasingly tech-savvy populace and upcoming emergence of tier II cities are all very conducive factors. India still has a relatively low barrier to entry for young-age entrepreneurs. ISB is capitalizing on the environment and the wave nicely and we feel entrepreneurship will remain a flavour of times for at least the next five years.
