Harvard Business School Dean Jay O. Light, 68, the ninth person to serve as the school’s dean since its founding in 1908, is stepping down after serving in a number of positions for 40 years, the school in Boston said in a statement. Light was named interim dean in August 2005 when Dean Kim Clark left the post to join Brigham Young University-Idaho. Light was made the permanent dean in April 2006.
Light said he did not intend to pursue other full-time employment after his departure but planned to write and spend more time sailing. The school will start the search for new dean, said the school officials.
Looking at Harvard Business School’s official statistics, the school has a yield rate of 89%. Its class of 2011 currently has 942 enrolled students, which is 42 more than last year’s entering class. HBS received total 9,093 applications and accepted 12% of the applicants.
According to The Harvard Crimson, Deirdre C. Leopold, Managing Director of MBA Admissions and Financial Aid, said that the numbers are not yet final and enrollment may settle between 930 to 940 by the time classes begin in the fall. Leopold also mentioned that the school considered adding one more section in 2008 but decided against it for some reasons, including the market conditions. However, the school should have no problem accommodating more students as classrooms are equipped for the same.
The Business School also announced that applications for admission to its 2+2 program—now in its second year—increased by 34 percent, from 631 to 844.
Students at Harvard business school developed a voluntary ‘oath’ and till date about 1,000 fresh graduates have joined hands, which includes about 10% of Kellogg’s graduating class. The graduates who take the oath promise to remain ethical and responsible, guard the interests of shareholders, create a sustainable and prospering environment. .. Some say that it is expected to change the way management is perceived and will introduce more professional approach. For some, oath is not required to be ethical or business has limited liability to the society but to stakeholders.
